How Anti-Racist Education Can Pave a Safer Way to College

Blog-Featured-Images-for-SPN-35

Anti-racist education has yet to become a national priority. How do we ensure that historically oppressed racial groups get to pursue higher education? ScholarPrep Nation believes in the college success of African-American students.

Although the concept of racial justice often focuses on institutional and social change, it rarely zooms in on the subject of education. College admission rates dropped by 8.8% in 2022 which means that there’s much more to be done.

How do we help anti-racist educators bring more equity within the classroom? How can we increase academic achievement levels and decrease college application failure? Read on!

How Important Is Anti-Racism in the Classroom?

Abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass once stated that “It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Unfortunately, many educators fail to acknowledge this very simple fact.

Anti-racist pedagogy is an active process that should define one’s K-12 years. Most Black students are unaware of the extent of racial inequity. That is where anti-racist teaching steps in and sheds light on the so-called uncomfortable subjects.

It’s a less-known fact that schools, where minority students make up the majority, are much more likely to hire uncertified teachers. Unfortunately, the severity of systemic racism has become a tangible part of our country’s fabric.

Our youth needs to be made aware of the injustice. Anti-racism in the classroom can save lives, increase academic achievement levels, and motivate students of color to further understand the college application process.

Why Is Critical Race Theory (CRT) Silenced?

Any anti-racist educator knows how hard it is to talk about the things that matter most. Becoming aware of systemic racism will automatically help kids learn more about CRT. Sadly, CRT could be currently banned in your state

First, we should take a closer look at why anti-racist educators wish to teach CRT. This is mainly because African-American history, traditions, and wisdom are purposefully being silenced. The kids are only aware of the tip of the iceberg, namely slavery. Critical consciousness is needed now more than ever before.

We can constantly identify racism in laws, public policy, and institutions. As it is, white supremacy is a continuous threat to the college success of Black students. In fact, our youth is much more likely to earn community college certificates rather than bachelor’s degrees. This is a clear indication that anti-racist pedagogy has a long way to go.

Currently, there is no known pedagogical method to undo racism. Due to this, we need to push toward an anti-racist curriculum. By incorporating CRT, we can guide Black youth in the direction of personal reflection. Critical examination of our society is now a must.

Can K-12 Family Engagement Lead to College?

A study showed that over 4,000 parents and their young ones benefitted from family engagement activities. By continuously engaging, they were much more likely to become familiarized with the college application process and pick the right college.

Anti-racist educators must prioritize parental engagement and regard it as an integral part of their overall anti-racist work. As most of us already know, the contributions of Black parents are belittled and seldom taken into consideration. They are not considered experts.

It’s time to critically examine the gap between home and school and take an anti-racist approach that could increase college admission levels.
